Thermostat settings are hugely dependent on personal preference and what you think to be home comfort for you and your family. However, if you speak with one of our technicians about how you can use your thermostat to save on your annual
air conditioner service appointment, they will most likely provide a couple things to consider this winter.
- While it’s nice to constantly be saving money because you have your thermostat at a lower setting, it could end up costing more if you set it too low. The sweet spot is turning your thermostat back 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit/5-7 degrees Celsius for 8 hours, as it can save you between 5 and 15 percent on your energy bills each year, according to Energy.gov.
- If your thermostat is set too cold or you shut off your air conditioner altogether, you could risk freezing your pipes. This, of course, can create huge problems for all of the uninsulated pipes in your home. Most kitchen and bathroom pipes aren’t insulated, so if they freeze, they could burst and cause significant water damage to your home.
- Condensation is also a threat when you have your thermostat set too low. Your air conditioner service technician can help find areas where this condensation could occur, so when you choose a temperature, you can be sure it’s not going to potentially cause damage to any of the wood or electronics inside your home.
Your home comfort is arguably one of the most important things to stay ahead of this winter, and rightly so. Just because you want to save a bit of money in the process doesn’t mean that you can’t keep comfortable either.
